Only a 1972 Preakness loss by Riva Ridge stood between them and horse racing history with back to back Triple Crown championships from the same barn. During the 1973 Triple Crown season, Secretariat was on the cover of Time Magazine, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated. This was the zenith of horse racing prominence in the eyes of the American public.
