This is a gorgeous photograph of Secretariat rolling to victory in the 1973 Kentucky Derby. “Big Red’s” final time of 1:59.2 is the Churchill Downs Derby and track record that still stands today. This is a powerful photograph of the champ on a great day.
Secretariat’s three year old season was the greatest run by any horse racing champion ever. During the 1973 Triple Crown season, Secretariat was on the cover of Time Magazine, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated. This was the zenith of horse racing prominence in the eyes of the American public.
Secretariat was ridden by Ron Turcotte and trained by Lucien Laurin. Gallery of Champions copyright watermark does not appear on the actual photographs
