This is a gorgeous photograph of Secretariat having the final touches done before the 1973 Preakness Stakes. He would go on to a spectacular performance that only a misfiring teletimer kept him from setting a track record. His subsequent Belmont Stakes world record of 2:24 flat was superior to any Belmont Stakes running performance by at least 10 lengths. Secretariat’s three year old season was the greatest run by any horse racing champion ever. During the 1973 Triple Crown season, Secretariat was on the cover of Time Magazine, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated. This was the zenith of horse racing prominence in the eyes of the American public. “Big Red” was ridden by Ron Turcotte and trained by Lucien Laurin. Gallery of Champions copyright water mark does not appear on the actual photographs.
